Services are varied based on the nature of the addiction. It will be different if the detox program will be addressing an alcohol addiction or a drug addiction, and it will also vary depending and the type of drug the patient is addicted to and their level of drug use. This means that detox always begins with a medical assessment that defines the true nature of the addiction and the best prescription for detoxification.
There are consistencies in detox treatment as well. Detox can be offered in both in-patient and out-patient setting. Especially when dealing with certain types of drug addiction, particularly those that address stimulant detox, there may also be a partial hospitalization that will provide closer medical oversight during the detox process. This will all be determined during the initial medical assessment.
Costs vary, based on the same criteria that determines what the detox prescription will be. Prices can range from free, to several thousand dollars, and the first and most impactful variable is determined by where the program will happen. Out-patient care is often limited to just the cost of the medications that will be used. The range is $21 to upwards of $5,000 per year. One year is the recommended duration for any detox program to be fully effective.
If care will be delivered in an inpatient setting, costs will range from $690, up to as much as $7,000 per month, with some private rehab centers crossing the $10,000+ mark per month. In many cases, these costs can be offset by insurance coverage, both private and Medicare.
In some non-profit centers, the costs can be fully or partially offset by donations. However, demand for these facilities is high and patients may actually find a waiting list before admission will be possible. In these cases, patients can begin with outpatient care and transition into in-patient programs as space becomes available.
In Maine, there are two classes of rehab program being offered. They are both tasked to deliver the same detox, whether of alcohol or drugs, but the setting in which this treatment is delivered and the level of care are not always the same, and it isn’t just about resort-like luxury accommodations either.
The argument for a luxury program the ability for these programs to provide a more personalized and much more attentive level of detox care. This happens as the result of a much lower ratios of staff to patients. This lower ratio means staff can take the time to better know the people they are treating, the triggers that lead to the addiction, and are better able to assess how each patient is progressing through their alcohol or drug detox.
Lastly, these centers offer a much greater level of privacy and for those patients that live in the public eye, this can be a critical factor. In these centers, even the most well-known patients can count on a path to recovery that is private and personal.
Determining what type of care setting will work best is first determined by the nature of the addiction. Some of the questions to be asked will be, what is the patient addicted to and how long and how much have they been using. It will also be important to know if the patient is coming into this detox program for the first time or if they tried and failed in the past.
In terms of the type of addiction, drugs in the stimulant category are often the most complicated given the negative impact detox can have on the body. For deep additions to opioids, where withdrawal depression is a serious concern, an in-patient program beginning with partial hospitalization may be recommended. For other with milder cases of alcohol or drug dependencies may do well in an out-patient setting. In either case, the recommended duration of the detox/rehab program is one year, and for in-patient care, the recommendation is for a 90-day treatment plan within the facility.
